Granite quarrying started slowly in this area in the late 18th century with small operations peppered across the rocky terrain. Construction of a fort at Castle Island in Boston Harbor in 1798 followed by a jail in nearby Salem in 1813, jump started the granite business here on Cape Ann. During the 1830s and 1840s, the trade grew steadily.
This hill would have been easily seen from the mining camps along the north fork of the American River in the 1850’s. While the north and south forks of the American river, now under Folsom lake, were full of panning and sluice operations, there was really no hard rock mines in the area.

The Granite-Bimetallic Mine is near Philipsburg, Montana. Historically the site has been associated with the Philipsburg-Granite-Flint Creek Mining District which is now part of the Deerlodge National Forest. The site was first discovered in 1872.
